What Is It?

Stamp 1G — Ireland's gift to international graduates

Stamp 1G (the "G" stands for Graduate) is a post-study immigration permission granted by the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) to non-EEA graduates of Irish higher education institutions.

In plain terms: after you finish your degree, instead of being told to leave immediately, Ireland gives you 12 months to stay, work, and find a job — without requiring you to have one first. If you secure employment during this time, your employer can sponsor your work permit, extending your permission to 24 months and starting your path to long-term residency.

No other English-speaking country offers this level of post-graduation freedom combined with this quality of job market. The UK has tighter restrictions. Canada has cut back significantly. Australia's regional requirements make it harder. Ireland's Stamp 1G remains the most straightforward post-study work arrangement available in 2026.

Stamp 1G is Ireland's post-study work permission granted to non-EEA graduates of Irish HEIs. It allows graduates to remain in Ireland for 12 months (extendable to 24) to seek employment after completing their degree, without requiring a job offer.
Stamp 1G is initially granted for 12 months. It can be extended to 24 months total once you secure employment and your employer applies for your work permit (Critical Skills or General Employment Permit).
Yes. Stamp 1G allows you to work in any sector, with any employer, for any number of hours — there is no restriction on employment on Stamp 1G. You are fully free to work while seeking permanent employment.
After securing employment, your employer applies for a work permit on your behalf — typically a Critical Skills Employment Permit or General Employment Permit. This transitions you to Stamp 1 or Stamp 4, leading toward permanent residency after 5 years.
Stamp 1G itself does not count toward the 5-year residency requirement for PR. However, the work permit period that follows does count. Most Indian students who graduated in 2019–2021 and stayed on Stamp 1G are now on their path to Irish PR or citizenship.
